Research: "the cry of the siren: tragedy and heroism in the public construction of the figure of firefighters"
by Galar, Santiago - CONICET-UNLP.
Calandron, Sabrina - UNLP

Adaptation: The authors intend to reconstruct the social characterization of the figure of firefighters in the context of a specific event: the fire in a warehouse located in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Barracas, in February 2014.

rebuild  in the first instance the process of meaning of the task and figure of the firefighter. According to the authors, it is a figure culturally associated with "vocation", "dedication", altruism and social defense. They describe the construction of the dramatic plot of the so-called "Tragedy of Barracks", an event where the figure of the firefighter is placed in the center of the public scene. They also have a third process that unites the previous ones, insofar as they face the lack of social enemies of the firefighters' task, the absence of actors responsible for the tragedy that occurred in Barracas and the difficulty in characterizing the specific event that caused the multiple deaths. (the collapse of a wall) there was a turn of attention that began to focus on the biography of the victims and the particularities of the daily task of firefighters.

As a result of the work  proposes a reading of this event along the line of analysis of the sacrifices, through which a set of normalized and simple everyday events, such as the professional activity of firefighters, become heroic and glorious. The hero firefighter is presented to society only after the event has been presented as a tragedy, the firefighter activity as a constant daily delivery and death as a break in that daily life.
